ULTRAKILL review

ULTRAKILL!!!!! A legendary game in movement tech and oozing with style, this is a game that came out fully in the mid 2020s and has had lasting effects on indie games ever since. New Blood was and still is a titan of indie shooters (and also FAITH), and you will find no better option than ULTRAKILL. Lightning fast, ultraviolent, explosive and addictive, it quickly cemented its place among the great shooters of the pre-2040 AAA-downfall decentralization incident.

Literally going as “DevilMayQuake” before being officially cemented as ULTRAKILL, the game wears its inspirations on its sleeve and still continued to add more and more new and unique gameplay elements. I can’t recommend this game enough if you like shooters— it’s got everything you’re looking for!!! ITS AWESOME!!!! You can PUNCH YOUR OWN BULLETS!!! YOU CAN RIDE ON ROCKETS?!?! YOU CAN FISH!!!!! YOU CAN…………… dating sim?!?!?!

It’s not a slouch in its story, either— apparently there was some ARG stuff back when the game was still in early access, which is really cool but difficult to access in its entirety after over 70 years. Thankfully, most of the experience has been preserved online, so you can read up on that part of the lore yourself on sites like this one. The game’s story is very well presented and not obtrusive to the actual game itself— you’ll only spend hours reading the lore if you WANT to spend hours reading the lore!! There’s a little something for everyone!!!!

Overall, the concept is simple:

MANKIND IS DEAD.

BLOOD IS FUEL.

HELL IS FULL.

You’re a robot, powered by blood, diving into hell to get more blood. It obviously gets more complex than that, but V1 (the player character) does not seem to waver from their goal. It’s not about a personal journey, it’s about how CRAZY STUBBORN they are while all this super dramatic revolution against Heaven stuff is happening in your peripheral. You can ignore it, or you can pay attention to it— V1 has a goal, and they’re GOING to get more blood. And they get PLENTY OF IT.

There’s not much to say about ULTRAKILL that hasn’t already been said hundreds of times— it’s probably one of the best games ever made. Even after putting hundreds of hours into it, I find myself jumping into the Cyber Grind after a long day just to see how far I can get. Learning the movement tech and utilizing it well is like a beautiful dance, super duper satisfying and fun. I love Quake, and I love ULTRAKILL. 9.7/10.
