THE MONSTER BENEATH OUR FEET
( DISCLAIMER EDIT : Neither Babs nor Jackie IRL endorse this story and claim they saw different things. I don’t want to speak for them, this is just my own viewpoints of events. I did not intend to misrepresent my friends in ways they did not want so please do not take my word as gospel here )There is a legend in Neo Theseus City, one that you can’t easily find discussed online, but something well known to its citizens regardless. It is a legend of snapping teeth and rusty wires, a creature beneath layers of stone and brick and fiber-optics that we treat as nothing more than a joke, a way to scare off children, a myth. But it is REAL.
Let me assure you, my dear readers, THE MONSTER GEAR OF THE METRO, also known as the METROBEAST, exists, and it LURKS BENEATH US ALL. And I survived an encounter with it. THIS IS A COMPLETELY REAL STORY THAT HAPPENED TO ME!!!!!
I was never one to explore abandoned railway tunnels the same way my good friend Babs does, but I was recently doing research into the Metrobeast after hearing it mentioned in hushed whispers online. Info on the Metrobeast is RARE at best, though it seems to all be very consistent information, even through word-of-mouth. Babs herself claimed it didn’t exist, but I thought differently- I thought she might have just been lucky.
I made a DECISION: I would snap a picture of the beast and post it online, proving its existence to the world! But in reality, what happened ended up being much more chilling…
Leaving on a clear-skied Saturday evening, Jackie and Babs followed me into the subway tunnels and after hopping some fences that Babs knew about, we were in: dusty and dingy cylinders of stone, walls covered in graffiti, empty cans and digicigarette butts lying around all over the floor. It smelled like old gasoline and cement. Making sure to remember our path (thanks Babs), we took lefts and rights and straights, circling back in ways I didn’t quite follow but that Babs was well familiar with, showing us her favourite spots…
But nothing happened! There was no sign of the Metrobeast to be seen. I was getting frustrated and, in my attempt to find results, decided to go into a deeper part of the tunnels that Babs didn’t dare enter alone (of course they both came with me with some coaxing). As it turns out, the tunnels of the metro system beneath the city run more winding than I thought, and after a few twists and turns I began to think we had gotten lost…
After about twenty minutes of wandering, however, we heard something. It was NOT a sound that a simple train would make, nor did we see any approaching lights- the railway track was gnarled and rusty from disuse, anyway. No subway car would be found this far in.
It was the scariest sound I’d ever heard. If I had any hair, it would be standing right on end. It sounded like some sort of distorted bear demon, and it was hungry…
We probably should have turned around and ran by that point, but I was determined. Nobody believed it really existed, except for those who knew something I didn’t. I wanted to know what it was hiding-- what kind of creature it was. Some believe the Metrobeast is genuinely a massive Gear, or that it's some sort of demon, or extra-dimensional creature that took up residency in the tunnels ‘neath our feet. It is our homegrown cryptid, and we don’t know what it is or what it wants. All I know is that I believe in my heart it is real, and I had to prove its existence. So, despite Babs and Jackie’s concerns, I pressed forward, determined to get a picture of it.
The noise grew louder and louder as we approached, and we made sure to stick to the walls, attempting to stay out of sight as best as we could. And then…
I saw the reflection of steel approaching, the outline of teeth and glass in the deepest darkness, and suddenly…
I can’t accurately describe it, except for the fact that it looked like a snake, or maybe some kind of giant quadrupedal lizard made of subway cars and scrap metal. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before, taking up the entire tunnel like a wall of steel and glass. It was absolutely terrifying, and I was frozen for a moment before remembering to take a picture.
Unfortunately, Babs grabbed me roughly so that I’d remember to run, and in the commotion the camera I had with me slipped out of my hands! I wanted to run back and get it-- I NEEDED proof, as an intrepid reporter!!!-- but Babs and Jackie wouldn’t let me. It was probably best that they pulled me along into the tunnels and I was able to start running away proper-- that thing would have ONE HUNDRED PER CENT EATEN ME.
It was then that I’d realized…
We’d LOST OUR WAY.
Running through the tunnels, they seemed so much bigger than I’d remembered, twisting and winding like a maze, or maybe it was just me being too frazzled to remember the way back. Luckily, Babs has a super sharp mind, so she grabbed me and Jackie and we ran thru the tunnels together, and the whole time I was starting to think that we were going to die. It was so so scary, I couldn’t believe it was actually happening…
We were running for so long I thought maybe we’d never find our way out, until finally, we saw the LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL! & I couldn’t hear the monster following us anymore, so I was reasonably sure we were in the clear…
By the time we made it back to the regular tunnels, I felt like I was going to pass out. It was past midnight, so the subway wasn’t very busy, and nobody thought too much of a bunch of kids running onto the landing. Babs kept going for some reason, running until we were out of the subway entirely, and she ducked into a nearby V-V. We were completely out of breath, exhausted…
“Well… that was insane,” I said to my friends.
I don’t have any solid proof of the encounter, so I really hope you believe me based on this story. I really want to make sure people believe in the Metrobeast the same way I do…
It exists!!!! I DON’T KNOW WHY ITS DOWN THERE, but I have THEORIES. I’ll be sure to try to gather more information about it, as much as I can… Is it a treasure? A family? A SECRET SOCIETY????? ANYTHING could be in the tunnels, and NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT!!!!! But I SAW IT, and I promise I’ll give you proof!
